A Very Special Event – Indoor Tennis!

On 27th March You could be taking part in our very special tennis event – Indoor Tennis – with Phil and the posse at the Gosling Sports Park, Welwyn Garden City.

This event is for everyone: those who are ambulant; those who use crutches; wheelchair users; those who use other mobility aids; basically, anyone within our remit who would like to give it a go as the venue will supply sports wheelchairs for your use.

The Centre is fully accessible, and offers year-round access to indoor and outdoor tennis courts and is recognised as a leading hub centre in the LTA/Tennis Foundations Disability Network. The centre itself is the largest tennis facility in the country with seventeen indoor and five outdoor courts. It is a ground-breaking 50-acre sports and leisure complex in Welwyn Garden City, and hosts a diverse range of sports and leisure facilities making it one of the most prestigious developments of its kind in the UK

Don’t worry if you have never even thought about, or heard of, wheelchair tennis before. The rules are the same with one concession – the wheelchair user can allow the ball to bounce twice before striking. That’s it! Same space, same techniques, same fun, and the beauty is that matches can be played with non-wheelchair users on court. So, playing with friends or even mixed doubles is eminently do-able.

Moreover, the Centre will supply sports wheelchairs for added mobility around the court, as well as expert tuition. These specialist chairs have a wide wheelbase for easier, safe mobility (fast turns are a great aid to better play) and safety strapping to help those with low or no abdominal strength. But the main attributes are not strength, they are timing and technique, which you will acquire with the expert tuition. Most of all it will be FUN!

So, novices and never-evers are absolutely welcomed. It’s what Nick and the team do best! They’ll be on hand to tutor you from the most basic beginnings to the finer details of the game.

And if you have played before this will be the ideal opportunity to re-engage with the sport.  It’s different, fun and exciting, you may even surprise yourself!
