Canoeing near Leeds
Thursday 11th July 2024
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are delighted to announce a day of canoeing just a few miles out of Leeds city centre. The crew at the Leeds Activity and Sailing Centre, on Yeadon Tarn, will be waiting to welcome you.
There they’ll provide several canoes for you to experience the joy, the fun, the exhilaration of this sport. There is enough variety for everyone! So complete novices and never-evers are more than welcome.
There is a friendly team of experience instructors at the Centre, who will welcome you whatever your level of expertise. So you can look forward to a great day out on the water!
Thursday 11th July 2024 – Arrival time 10.30amĀ for 11am – 1pm.
The Centre can be found at Cemetery Road, Leeds, LS19 7UR. That’s near the airport and some 16 miles west of J45 of the A1M
The Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre is fully accessible and very user friendly, with level entrances, accessible toilets and changing rooms and a lift to the first floor meeting rooms.
There is wheelchair access to all parts of the Centre and onto the pontoon. There is also a purpose built hoist available if needed, for assisting people into and out of the canoes.
Life Jackets are of course provided, but we suggest that you bring a towel and perhaps a change of clothes – you might get wet!
Don’t worry if you haven’t tried canoeing before, there will be plenty of hands-on advice, guidance and instruction.
And remember that with Sportability, anyone within our remit can participate free of charge.
You don’t need special clothing – anything that is comfortable is OK. Tracksuits are ideal, but any casual trouser, jeans, tee-shirts and sweatshirts or fleeces are fine. It will always feel cooler on the water, so it is a good idea to bring an extra layer. As mentioned before a change of clothes is also not a bad idea – just in case.
There are no facilities for food at the Centre, but there’s hot water for the much needed tea or coffee. And you could also bring along a packed lunch.
For more substantial sustenance, there’s a pub just five minutes away from the Centre, the Hawthorne Farm, which has full disability facilities and access.
So just to recap on those details:
Canoeing – Thursday 11th July 2024, a 10.30am meet and greet for an 11.00am start. We will finish at around 1pm.
