A Very Special Event – Indoor Tennis!

We have arranged a very special tennis event with Neil and the posse at Riverside Lawn Tennis Club in Bedford and You could be taking part. Just contact us, here at Sportability, to book your place.

Riverside supplies sports wheelchairs for everyone within our remit who would like to try, and they also provide training in how to use these, so if you currently use a wheelchair or not, you are all welcome to come along and have a go.

Riverside Lawn Tennis Club is an accredited LTA performance centre just outside Bedford Town centre. The centre itself boasts six all-weather and three carpet floodlit tennis courts. These were recently built in 2006 and the three carpet courts were updated in 2009. In winter, three courts are covered by an Air-Hall, allowing “Indoor” play.

And don’t worry if you have never even thought about, or heard of, wheelchair tennis before. The rules are the same with one concession – the wheelchair user can allow the ball to bounce twice before striking. That’s it! Same space, same techniques, same fun, and the beauty is that matches can be played with non-wheelchair users on court. So playing with friends or even mixed doubles is eminently do-able.

Moreover, the Riverside guys will supply sports wheelchairs for added mobility around the court, as well as expert tuition.  These specialist chairs have a wide wheel base for easier, safe mobility (fast turns are a great aid to better play) and safety strapping to help those with low or no abdominal strength.  But the main attributes are not strength, they are timing and technique, which you will acquire with the expert tuition.  Most of all it will be FUN!

So novices and never-evers are absolutely welcomed. It’s what Neil and the team do best! They’ll be on hand to tutor you from the most basic beginnings to the finer details of the game.  And if you have played before this will be the ideal opportunity to re-engage with the sport.

It’s different, fun and exciting, You may even surprise yourself!

We will meet at 12.15am for a 12.30 pm start and go on until 2.00pm

Note: Parking is limited on site so we’d like you there promptly at 12.15 so that we can get everyone a space. Also the loos are not wheelchair accessible, so please bear that in mind. Thanks
