Gliding in North Midlands
Wednesday 24th July 2019
We are thrilled to announce that Darlton Gliding Club, near Tuxford, east of Worksop are preparing an airborne welcome for us. This friendly, pro-active gliding club draws people from Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and beyond – thanks to their very convenient and accessible location, situated between the A1 and A57 roads.
With a fleet of K13’s, two-seater gliders (the workhorse of many gliding clubs) they are offering us “the fascination of silent flight.” The views above the Nottinghamshire countryside, the fields, forests and farmlands are absolutely stunning, and they claim that on a clear day you can see the gorgeous Peak District to the west and out to the North Sea in the east!
They are offering a winch tow where the glider is hooked on to a steel cable. At a pre-arranged signal the winch – situated at the far end of the airfield, over a km away – starts winding in the cable. The glider speeds along the runway and accelerating becomes airborne, it can then rapidly climb to heights of approximately 1200′ to 2000′ (depending on wind conditions). At the top of this climb, the winch cable is released, and falls to the ground under a small parachute. Meanwhile the glider is free to fly away.
We start this aerial experience on Wednesday 24th June.
We plan to arrive at 12.30 pm for a meet and greet, with flying starting at 1.00 pm. And we should be finishing around 4.00 pm. But please remember this is a weather dependant activity and there could be delays.
And remember: It is entirely free of charge to Sportability participants.
Our local men-about-Notts, David and Neil, advise that there are good facilities on site and we can use the clubhouse. It has a ramped entrance, accessible loo and we can use the kitchen to make hot drinks. They even measured the door width’s etc and David says, “If anyone has any concerns just refer them to Neil or myself” [see below]
The full Club address is: Darlton Gliding Club Ltd. Tuxford Road Darlton Newark Notts NG22 0TQ. But for more information and directions log on to their website here
Please note that for the gliding day there is a limitation of height and weight, so we can’t take anyone over 6ft 4ins or 16 stone.
So just to recap on those details:
Wednesday 24th July. Arrive 12.30pm until approx. 4.00pm. And don’t worry if you’ve never even considered it before – you will have a blast.
We’re sending this to a spread of people across one of our most densely populated areas. So, if this is out of range for you, then please let us know. The objective: To provide more sport for more people. To paraphrase: If you can get to it. Just do it!
