Blokarting – Speed and Excitement
Tuesday 9th April 2019
We are delighted to announce some exciting Blokart ‘Taster’ Sessions on Tuesday 9th April 2019.
The Chairman of York Land Yacht Club, Stuart Guy is waiting to welcome us to what promises to be a day of fun, excitement, speed, learning, laughter and discovery.
Stuart and the team are based at Elvington Airfield, adjacent to the Yorkshire Air Museum and five miles south east of the City of York. The site has one of the largest runways in Europe – two miles of smooth tarmac with a huge square pan area and various service roads, a runway so long that it was designated an emergency landing site for both Concord and the Space Shuttle. You will enjoy the unique experience of sailing in the shadow of the Victor Tanker (one of the major exhibits of the Air Museum) which sits overlooking the eastern end of the runway.
The Blokart is a small, easily portable, type of landyacht – like a wheeled seat with a huge sail. You sit close to the ground and the impression of speed is tremendous. In fact it is fast! The European Blokart speed record is an amazing 59.6mph. It’s faster than sailing on water and it’s an incredibly manoeuvrable craft. The beauty for us is that it is all hand controls and you don’t need to use your legs at all.
There are wheelchair accessible toilets but no cafe or tea making facilities on site so you will need to bring along a packed lunch and your own beverages.
There will be several karts available and the format is:
Meet and greet by the hut at the entrance to the airfield promptly at 10.30 am. We will be taken, in convey, on to the airfield. There will be a briefing and training session; and then YOU will be sailing!
And don’t worry if you have never even thought about, or heard of, Land Yachting or Blo-karting before. Novices and never-evers are absolutely welcomed. It’s what Stuart and the team do best! They’ll be on hand to help get you in and out of the craft and to tutor you in the finer details of flying on the ground.
It’s different, fun and exciting, You may even surprise yourself!
And remember that with Sportability anyone within our remit can participate free of charge.
By definition, it can be very breezy and open to the elements. So please bring warm clothing and sturdy enclosed footwear (trainers are fine). If it’s rainy you might require a change of clothes.
