Canoeing at Debdale Lake
Friday 30th August 2019

Friends, Amigos. Amici,

We are pleased to announce our a brand new event for our members in the Manchester/Liverpool area – canoeing and kayaking on the waters of the Lake in Debdale Park, with Martin and the crew.

The Debdale Outdoor Centre is a modern purpose-built centre, just to the east of Manchester. The facility is based on the Lower Gorton reservoir and there’s an exciting range of water-based activities include dinghy sailing, windsurfing, power-boating, canoeing and kayaking. But for our first visit we’ll be concentrating on the canoeing and kayaking.

The Centre is fully accessible with wheelchair friendly loos, changing rooms and (if needed) showers.

Friday 30th August 2019.

We’ll meet at 12.30pm at the Reception then it’s in for a briefing and kit-up; and kick-off at approx. 1pm.   We will have mixed sessions on the water and you’ll be able to try various types of canoe. So we’ll go through until approx. 4pm.

The sessions will consist of three opportunities – using either an open (Canadian) canoe a twin hull Katacanu or a Kayak. You might even try all three!

For those who are more confident and perhaps with some experience, the single seater kayaks are a preferred option. But for complete beginners, or those who feel they need a bit more support we recommend the open canoe. And, for even more security the Katacanu is two hulls lashed together to form a catamaran – a very stable craft!

This event is available to everyone, whether you have canoed before or not. Absolute beginners are very welcome. And you might start with the Katacanu or Canadian, and graduate to the Kayak, but this will be at the discretion of the instructors on the day.

Of course, there will be instructors and/or recovery crew in safety boats throughout the activities.

While there is NO hoist available, don’t worry! There is plenty of assistance on hand for getting in and out of the craft.

Lifejackets will be provided, and the usual wardrobe is T-shirt, shorts or trackie bottoms and canvas shoes or trainers. But you should bring a change of clothes. Even if you don’t go in, you may still get very wet!
