Martial Arts

As possibly the first people to even try martial arts from the wheelchair we claim some history and insight. For example: for anyone to "attack" someone in a wheelchair they will usually be off-balance i.e. striking downwards. In the true philosophy of martial artistry this weakness can be viewed as a vulnerability, and can be used against the opponent. Then the wheelchair itself can be a useful weapon.

As one of our instructors said, "Introducing someone's head to the arm of a wheelchair at speed can be quite disabling." And the knees and the lap can be a good working area for controlling an opponent. So the opportunities are different and challenging, but ultimately exciting.

But this is not about fighting machines; it is about exploring options for enjoying a sport, developing your own physical attributes – balance, movement, timing - building a modest base of self-defence skills and above all creating confidence.
