A Very Special Kent Event – Wheel Chair Tennis!

We have arranged a very special tennis event with Alex and the posse at the Avenue Tennis Club in Gillingham, Kent and You could be taking part. Just contact us, here at Sportability, to book your place.

Avenue Tennis supplies sports wheelchairs for everyone within our remit who would like to try. So if you currently use a wheelchair or not, you can all take part.

Avenue Tennis is situated just off the A2 London Road in Gillingham and is a fully accessible centre. The club boasts four grass courts, five clay and two AstroTurf courts all with state-of-the-art floodlights making tennis accessible all year round. All this alongside three indoor tennis courts and three badminton courts.

And don’t worry if you have never even thought about, or heard of, wheelchair tennis before. The rules are the same with one concession – the wheelchair user can allow the ball to bounce twice before striking. That’s it. Same space, same techniques, same fun! And the beauty is that matches can be played with non-wheelchair users on court. So playing with friends or even mixed doubles is eminently do-able.

The Centre will supply sports wheelchairs for everyone within our remit. So whether you currently use a wheelchair or not, you can all take part. These specialist chairs have a wide wheel base for easier, safe mobility (fast turns are a great aid to better play) and safety strapping to help those with low or no abdominal strength. But the main attributes are not strength, but timing and technique.

So novices and never-evers are absolutely welcomed. It’s what Alex and the team do best! They’ll be on hand to tutor you from the most basic beginnings to the finer details of the game.

And if you have played before this will be the ideal opportunity to re-engage with the sport.

It’s different, fun and exciting, You may even surprise yourself! We will meet at 11.30am for a 12.00 pm start and go on until 2.00pmThere is ample parking on site, accessible snack bar and cafe on the lower level and lifts to the upper floors, plus wheelchair accessible loos.
