Our Dorset and Hants region is flourishing in the capable hands of Area Organiser, Tim Worner. Tim understands the Sportability Experience from the inside.
The first symptoms of his MS appeared in 2000, but it was not until 2001 that he was finally diagnosed. He says, “It was a real shock. But I am determined to keep as active as possible. I have a great wife [Shirley] and I decided to get on with my new way of life.”
He was then manager of a large mainstream supermarket, but as his MS progressed and his mobility deteriorated they gave him early ill-health retirement. “They were very understanding of my situation.”
Tim was already actively sailing, carriage riding, going to the gym and doing various projects with The MS Society & MS Trust (including making an exercise DVD with Mr. Motivator for PWMS) when he heard about Sportability through his local MS Society. So in the summer of 2007 he joined us at Matchams for one of our first multi-sports days in the region. Tim had so much fun on the day, quad-biking and clay pigeon shooting, that he soon became a regular attendee.
With his enthusiasm and positive approach we were delighted when Tim agreed to take on a more active role as our Area Organiser. Since then, Sportability in Dorset in Hants has had one of the most exciting and diverse programme of events - and this continues to develop.
With Tim’s energy in researching new events, activities and collaborations, we are now proud to be able to offer sports such as scuba diving, gliding, target pistol paintballing, shooting, carriage driving, lake and sea sailing, in addition to quad-biking, canoeing and archery.
After shooting with Sportability – and finding he is still a pretty mean marksman - he has gone back to one of his prior loves, and now shoots regularly at the Christchurch Gun Club. He has also taken up a new sport - horse riding. With those, and his active interest in Sportability and his MS group, he keeps as busy as he can under the circumstances.
Tim’s mantra is: One life. Live it. It is one that he is helping dozens of people in Dorset and Hants to achieve.
