Welcome to Sportability
Sportability, a registered charity, provides sport and challenging pursuits for people with paralysis around the UK. People with conditions such as spinal cord injury, stroke, MS and others, are able to participate in a whole range of sports - scuba diving, sailing, archery, angling, abseiling, quad-biking, gliding, canoeing, clay pigeon shooting, go-karting, wheelchair tennis and many more.
It is not about creating elite sportsmen and women. It is about trying something new and different. It is about the adrenaline rush, putting the buzz back into a life corralled by the wheelchair, taking the 'dis' out of disability and focusing on ability. To inspire the thought, "If I can do this, what else can I achieve?"
Dame Kelly Holmes MBE Double Olympic Champion says, "I have seen how important sport can be in people's lives, both as athletes and fans. But the concept of using sport to rebuild a life shattered by paralysis adds another perspective. The work that Sportability does is not only fun, but it helps people to redefine themselves and achieve far beyond the confines of the wheelchair."
We're delighted to announce that tv presenter and broadcaster Julia Bradbury has also endorsed the Sportability ethos.
She says: In many of the challenges that I have undertaken both as a broadcaster and in my private life I have been taken well outside of my comfort zone. In fact it would be true to say that I have at times been terrified.
I therefore can't imagine how it could be for someone with a disability, and particularly paralysis, to undertake equally challenging pursuits and activities.
What I can imagine is the tremendous exhilaration and thrill, and I guess the sense of achievement, that comes with overcoming those fears, accepting the challenge and ultimately succeeding.
The work that Sportability does, providing opportunities for people with paralysis to participate in sports and other challenging events, to get out of the wheelchair and grab back that adrenalin rush, is nothing short of amazing. The credo of taking the 'dis' out of disability is so empowering.
You have my best wishes for continued success.
Sincerely,
Julia Bradbury
